Starting each new painting is an exciting process. Getting the lines of the face or posture just right, choosing the colours that make the figure come to life and most importantly finding that special essence that makes a person unique are all aspects of portraiture that must be worked through. With watercolour, a lot of it is controlling the uncontrollable – I have an idea of what the paint might do but it’s never really something I know until the painting is dry. I love putting the finishing touches on a portrait, small details such as jewellery can be so meaningful and choosing the perfect colour for a background wash can really make the painting come together. I try to really feel the mood of a photograph or the subject as I paint and it is so fun seeing it all come together at the end! Commission your own portrait here
O tall and stately thou stand
What gentle curves dost thou display Towering o'er the lowly can Thou effervescence lights the way To take a sip from thy glorious neck To taste where lemon and fizzy meet Willingly we will make the trek To Paeroa to see thy image in concrete |
